Privacy policy
Your crate stays on your iPhone.
Crate is an iPhone app for cataloging a vinyl collection, made by Blank Slate Creative, LLC (“we”). This policy explains what the app does with your information. The short version: we don’t collect any of it. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising, and no server of ours that the app talks to.
What stays on your device
Your collection (titles, artists, years, labels, catalog numbers, barcodes, formats, cover images, and your notes) is stored on your iPhone. Crate doesn’t sync it to iCloud or send it to us. If you back up your iPhone, to iCloud or to a computer, the backup includes Crate’s data. Crate also keeps recent lookup answers and cover images on your iPhone to speed things up and to work offline. Deleting the app deletes all of it from your iPhone.
If you enter a Discogs username to import a collection, the app remembers it on your iPhone so you don’t have to type it again.
What the app sends, and to whom
To find a record, Crate sends what you give it, directly from your iPhone, to these public music services: the words you search for, the barcode you scan or type, and the Discogs username you enter to import a public collection. To fetch cover art, Crate also sends the title and artist of records in your collection that have no cover yet, and, for a Discogs export file, the Discogs release number of each record. That can happen in the background after an import and when you open the app. When you open a record that isn’t matched to Apple Music, Crate also sends its title and artist to Apple’s service to find the album there. Your iPhone’s country setting goes to Apple’s service so it searches the right store.
- MusicBrainz and ListenBrainz, run by the MetaBrainz Foundation
- Cover Art Archive, run by the MetaBrainz Foundation with the Internet Archive
- Discogs, run by Zink Media, LLC
- Apple’s iTunes Search API, run by Apple
Like any internet request, these services can see your device’s IP address, the app’s name and version, and what you asked for. They may keep logs of requests, including your search words, under their own privacy policies; MetaBrainz describes this at metabrainz.org/privacy. We don’t receive any of it.
A Discogs export file you choose to import is read on your iPhone and the file itself isn’t uploaded. The titles and artists in it are used for the cover lookups described above.
We don’t sell your information or share it for advertising.
If you are in the EU or UK: we send the data above to those services so the app can do what you ask, and you can complain to your local data protection authority.
Camera
Crate asks for camera access only to read the barcode on a record. The camera image is processed on your iPhone and isn’t saved or sent anywhere.
Apple
If you have chosen to share iPhone analytics with app developers, Apple may give us crash reports and usage statistics that don’t identify you.
Children
Crate isn’t directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you email us and we learn you are under 13, we will delete your message.
Emailing us
If you email us, we receive your email address and what you write. We use them to reply and to keep a record of your request. We aim to delete support email 12 months after we last hear from you. To ask what we hold or to ask us to delete it sooner, email privacy@blankslate.biz; we aim to reply within 30 days.
Changes
If Crate ever starts collecting information, we’ll update this page and the App Store listing before the app version that does so is released, and change the date above.
